A Story Always has Two Sides

Growing up, whenever the continent of Africa was mentioned, I cringed. I didn’t want to be associated with the “savages” depicted on television or the slave “experience” detailed in my grade school textbooks. I recall shrinking into invisibility when my classmates shared their opinions about people from Africa. . . . and then I learned about the other side of my African heritage and history.

But thinking back on these experiences, I realize how the words of others often influenced my sense of worth and my decision to become as obscure as a wall. Join me as I share my Getting Off the Wall journey over the next few weeks.
